Description
The Rolex Explorer 6610 is one of the most important and collectible tool watches in Rolex’s storied history. Produced in the mid-1950s, the 6610 was the direct successor to the original Explorer 6150 and introduced a more refined, chronometer-rated automatic movement – the Calibre 1030. It marked Rolex’s transition from early rugged tool watches to the precision-engineered sports models that would define the brand’s reputation.
What makes this particular example especially desirable is its original black gilt dial, paired with a rare red depth rating — a detail that is exceptionally scarce and highly sought after by collectors. The combination of gilt printing and red text gives the dial a rich, dynamic look that changes in different lighting, adding to the depth and allure of the piece.
Its 36mm steel Oyster case, with the original Rolex signed screw-down crown, was robust for its time and still wears elegantly today. Fitted with a vintage 1967 rivet Oyster bracelet, the overall aesthetic remains faithful to the period and maintains full vintage authenticity.
The use of radium luminous paint on the numerals and markers adds to the vintage charm, giving it the kind of natural patina that can only be earned over decades. These features combined with the early automatic movement and clean Explorer dial layout make the 6610 a foundational piece in Rolex’s tool watch legacy.
The Explorer line has always symbolized adventure and exploration, tracing its roots back to Rolex’s association with the 1953 Everest expedition. The 6610 represents the earliest widely-available reference to carry the "Explorer" name on the dial, making it an essential piece of horological history.
