This year marks Gold Arts 40th birthday. From humble beginnings we now have stores stretching across East and West Sussex and a growing online store which reaches customers across the globe. Founded by Douglas Newman in 1979 in the heart of the Brighton Lanes, Gold Arts quickly established its sparkling reputation for fine jewellery, expert craftmanship and friendly knowledgeable service which is still central to the business today. This excellent reputation meant that the Gold Arts brand now has stores in Brighton, Chichester, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing, offering a range of services from bespoke jewellery manufacturing and repairs in our on site workshops, to professional jewellery and watch valuations and purchasing.
Our sister company, GA Jewellers and Pawnbrokers also offer a range of services, from pawnbroking to travel money and everything else Jewellery based. Perhaps you spotted Douglas Newman on channel 4’s series ‘Posh Pawn’ in 2016?

Original Jewellery Designs by Kerry Newman. Kerry Newman, daughter of founder Douglas Newman combines her creative eye with the technical skill of CAD design to create original expertly designed jewellery. Customers can come in and work with Kerry to create one off commissions with sketches fulfilling the customer’s design brief. Quite often it is the gemstone which determines many aspects of the design. The size and shape, especially if unusual or fancy cut can lend itself to different ideas on how on how it’s going to look best once mounted.
We use CAD as a tool to build and create designs that can later be 3D printed and then cast in any precious metal. The castings are hand assembled and hallmarked before setting gemstones and a final clean and polish to complete the piece.

Then and Now
Having been based in the heart of the Brighton lanes for over 40 years now, we have watched how the cobbled streets around us and Gold Arts itself has changed throughout the years. The labyrinth that is the Brighton lanes get busier each year and locals and tourists from across the world walk through the winding and weaving lanes throughout the year. In many ways not much has changed and this area of Brighton has remained the hub of all things jewellery and antique in the city. This heritage dates back to as far as 1750 and by the 1960’s The Lanes was an established community of antique dealers.

Today the Brighton lanes is witnessing a major change as a brand new lane named ‘ Hannington Lane’ is being developed and will soon link Brighton Place to the main shopping street North Street, welcoming the arrival of a new group of local businesses and restaurants to the lanes family. One of the most interesting and challenging aspects in the development of the new lane has been its careful effort to preserve the listed ‘Puget’s cottage,’ which sits between the square and North Street. The architects and builders have had to navigate around this building which dates as far back as the 17th century. Whilst this has been no easy feat, work is nearing completion and we are excited for the addition of a brand new lane, which has been carefully carved to preserve the special history of this area.

Whilst our windows glisten with diamonds and families wine and dine in the various restaurants and pubs nestled in the lanes, these historic streets are also rumoured to be a hotbed of phantom activity. Visit the Brighton Ghost Walk Website
