The Rolex GMT-Master II model 16700 holds a special place in the brand's history as it represents a transitional period for the iconic GMT-Master line. Introduced in the late 1980s, the 16700 replaced the earlier GMT-Master models like the 16750. It was in production for a relatively short period, from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, making it somewhat rare and highly sought after by collectors.
One notable feature of the 16700 is its use of the Caliber 3175 movement, an upgrade from the previous Caliber 3075. This movement allowed for the independent adjustment of the hour hand, enabling travelers to easily change time zones without affecting the accuracy of the minutes or seconds.
The 16700 also marked the transition from acrylic crystals to sapphire crystals, offering improved scratch resistance and durability.
Additionally, it was one of the last GMT-Master models to feature an aluminium bezel insert before Rolex switched to ceramic inserts in later iterations.
Despite its relatively short production run, the Rolex 16700 remains highly regarded among enthusiasts for its classic design, reliability, and historical significance within the GMT-Master lineup.
The “Pepsi’s” vintage charm and enduring appeal make it a prized possession for collectors and aficionados of fine timepieces.
