This 31mm "President" 18ct Yellow Gold Datejust from 1982 has an absolutely stunning configuration.
Combining a clean white dial with yellow gold appliques in the form of the iconic Rolex Crown at the 12-o'-clock position and Roman numerals at the hour markers, a perfect clean contrast is set that allows the gold to not overtly swallow the design aesthetic of the watch, an important balance to be found which we are glad Rolex did considering the extravagant use of the precious metal in the piece. The hands are also fashioned out of that same 18ct yellow gold, and have a spectacular teal-green lume applied within their central spines of the sword-style hands, the sparing use of which lends itself to balance and minimalising distraction from the ultimate purpose of this piece which is made clear by the spectacular fluted gold bezel, crown, and Jubilee bracelet - that of an absolutely beautiful dress watch. It does so well through its spectacular execution of these elements, not allowing the single use of 18ct yellow gold define the watch into monotony, the Crown has used a splendid array of textures and design cues to break up these elements and enrich them.
For example, the beautiful gold fluted bezel which feeds into the fluted crown capture the light with an extreme brilliance, which is then contrasted with the brushed gold appearance of the lugs and end links, which themselves are broken up by the polished case sides. This thoughtfulness extends to the Jubilee bracelet, polishing the central links and contrasting these with the brushed and more matted side links. This is not even to mention the immense impact all of these design cues have of elevating this watch truly to another world of refined luxury.
All of those dial elements are housed under a scratch-resistant Sapphire crystal, which is ever-so-slightly raised, allowing the crystal to capture the light at this periphery and frame the dial in a most delightful manner, adding to the dance of light that really makes this piece. Of course, this crystal is equipped with a domed cyclops lens for greater legibility of the date-window.
Within the piece, it will be of great pleasure for the wearer to know that they are wearing a piece of exquisite horological engineering, having been COSC-certified, the calibre 2035 has been more rigorously put to the test, post-encasing by Rolex for that assurance of Rolex quality that we have come to identify with the Crown. This calibre is also equipped with the instantaneous date-switching function at midnight, which is a real cherry on top for the more than capable exposition from Rolex.
This piece is elegance objectified, certainly it will be at home in the most refined of settings with no doubt.
