DESCRIPTION
This is arguably Rolex's most iconic diver since the introduction of the original "diver's friend" in the 1950s. The "Hulk", as its fame within the horological community has earned the piece its own epithet, is a combination of functionality and aesthetic in one spectacular package.
The impressively sunburst (to the point where one may be unsure of what, if there is one, the true colour is, or if this piece merely exists as an optical experience) green 40mm dial plays with the light in the most beautiful manner - the finishing on this dial is truly second to few, if any. Combined with the white-gold appliques that stunningly capture, multiply, and radiate even the smallest sheens of light against this beautiful green effect this watch is certain to be a conversation-starter, with many unable to even attempt to resist an optical attraction to the piece as it flirts with the light and plays itself out as this living, moving art piece on your wrist.
Put in abstract, a green dial with a green bezel sounds like too much, but in practice who better but Rolex to execute such a bold statement so well? The green unidirectional rotating Cerachrom bezel is a lovely accompaniment to the green motif, which has had such an impact in the collective consciousness such that we identify it instantaneously with the golden crown.
The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal features a just-perfect ring of diffraction on the periphery of the dial, managing to continue that light and green motif without the introduction of other elements. Featured on the crystal is a cyclops lens, which lends itself to the great utility of the watch, increasing angular visibility.
This is a true divers watch, beyond the aesthetic motifs, this is a capable piece equipped with a triplock-screw-down crown with crown guards, and 300 metres of water resistance that protects your investment. On the dial it lends itself to this cause with an impressive blue-green Chromalight lume that is sure to not fail you in the light-impoverished conditions of deep-sea diving.
And yet, as the style icon that it is, it remains both at home in the depths of the sea and on the wrist of the person of taste in the formal, and casual settings one wades through. Truly, there are not many watches more versatile than this piece.
Equipped to the well-finished stainless steel case, beyond the crown-guards and lugs is the updated oyster bracelet, featuring the well-designed Glidelock mechanism for the clasp.
Inside of the watch we will find a COSC-certified Swiss Chronometer, the self-winding (bi-directional rotor) calibre 3135, which has then undergone the even more rigorous testing that Rolex trials the movement through post-encasing to ensure the highest of precision that the Rolex crown near the top of the dial promises. The calibre is equipped with the Parachrom hairspring innovation, the blued hairspring not being a design cue, but oft-poorly emulated as design by inferior manufacturers who look up to Rolex's horological prowess, but the result of an innovation in the hairspring manufacturing relating to the oxidisation of the surface in such a manner as to provide the movement with an increased resistance to shocks and temperature changes that lends itself to the robustness of the movement, the implications of which Rolex has established their reputation from.
This is certainly an iconic piece, and will capture the eye of many.
